Golan – Umm-El-Kantir
Today we went up to Metula (which is the border with Lebanon) and the Golan Heights.
It is an eye-opening experience to actually see the close proximity of Lebanon and Syria to our northern border towns.
One appreciates in a much more tangible way the issues of security, water and energy etc. that (our) the land of Israel faces, and the decisions that must be made.
On of the real treats of the day was the visit to Umm-El-Kantir. It is an archaeological site of a synagogue from about 500 CE. It is amazing to me that what I have studied about in school and teach about now in school, comes alive! This is the only site in the world where they are rebuilding the synagogue with the actual materials that are there from antiquity!
I cannot wait for the future tours and learning that we will be able to do in the coming days.
